Chapter Six

Aodhan couldn’t even begin to figure out how he’d gotten into this position. Currently, he sat on his arse in the back of a large cave. Wrapping his arms around his knees, he pulled them up to his chest and tucked his kilt around them.

Sighing, Aodhan leaned against the rock wall. Talk about a life-changing experience. Fleeing his clan with his lover, only to then watch his sexy lover’s strong arms turn into the bones of leathery wings? Not only that, but riding said dragon?

Holy bollocks!

No wonder Aodhan felt a little light headed. He had good reason to be, after all. Man was not meant to crawl along tree branches like a squirrel, nor to soar through the air like a bird.

When Perth deposited him in this cave, then took off again, saying he would bring back fresh meat as well as firewood, it was actually a relief. He’d nodded absently, too focused on getting his stomach to cease rolling. It wasn’t like he had much in there to purge anyway. Just like every morning, his meal had consisted of a bowl of porridge. Lunch had been a bit of meat and cheese on a dry roll along with half an apple.

Not much to lose.

After a few minutes, Aodhan’s stomach stopped threatening to heave. His head still felt as though it would burst. He couldn’t believe his actions of the last, well, day and a half.

Could he blame his out of character behavior on Perth’s sweet attention after so long being mostly isolated from... everyone? Mayhap allowing the man to tug him off had fried his mind. That was the only explanation he could come up with. Mayhap, he’d been so satisfied, that this was all a dream. Surely dragons did not truly exist.

That has to be it.

I’m still in me bed and I just need to wake up.

The sound of rushing air followed by the scrape of claws on stone yanked Aodhan out of his mental ramblings. He looked at the entrance to find a large form blocking the afternoon light. Aodhan instinctively cringed, trying to disappear among the shadows.

The form drew closer, revealing the outline of the dragon. It crawled into the cave, using the thick wing joints that ran across the top of the appendages as forelegs. The creature had a long, slender neck, and a large, tapered snout.

In its mouth it carried something... but Aodhan found his gaze focused on the beast’s teeth. There were so many! And they were so large!

“Gods be merciful,” Aodhan whispered.

The dragon lowered whatever it carried—a stag, Aodhan finally realized—to the cave’s floor. It turned its head to focus on him for an instant. Aodhan felt a tremble work through him, and he just managed to keep from losing control of his bladder. Finally, it looked away and focused on something else. Lowering its snout to the ground near its hind legs, it picked up whatever had caught its attention. He moved it to the left wall of the cave, about ten paces away from Aodhan.
